Tamil Militant Groups (1970's)
In the 1970's, many Sri Lankan Tamils began to for militant groups after feeling disadvantaged by the supposed Sinhalese favoring government. In response, the Tamils wanted to form Tamil Eelam in northern Sri Lanka to serve as a separate state. This desire was furthered when the government passed acts such as the Sinhala Only Act which hurt young Tamil's ability to receive an education or respectable job. This example of the Tamil Militant counter culture resulted in many deaths, both militant and civilian.
